From Text to Tote: SMS Nudges to Cut Down Plastic Bag Purchases
摘要
Plastic pollution presents a severe environmental issue, contributing to waterway pollution, wildlife endangerment, and negative health impacts. Previous efforts, such as bans and fees, have had limited success in reducing plastic bag usage, often due to customers forgetting reusable bags. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SMS prompts as an antecedent intervention to reduce plastic bag purchases by reminding participants to bring reusable bags. Using a nonconcurrent multiple baseline design across participants with an embedded withdrawal phase, three participants received regular SMS prompts to reduce plastic bag purchases. Results indicated a decrease in plastic bag purchases across all participants during the SMS prompting phase, with purchases remaining below baseline after prompt withdrawal. These findings suggest that SMS prompts can serve as an effective, scalable tool to encourage reusable bag usage and reduce plastic bag consumption. Future research could explore varied messaging strategies to enhance compliance and sustainability behaviors further.
