Reluctance toward radio frequency identification (RFID) for safety management in oil & gas construction activities

The research attempts to identify and evaluate primary barriers preventing RFID adoption in safety management in oil and gas construction. The research focuses on primary barriers preventing RFID adoption reluctance and provides mechanisms of tackling these barriers in pursuit of enhanced safety compliance and efficiency in the sector. A mixed-method study is conducted, using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Mean Square Ranking Analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), in an attempt to test RFID adoption barriers. The data were collected and analyzed in an attempt to see which of these various barriers have a stronger impact, using SEM in an attempt to test each barrier. The study indicates that there are five major barriers to RFID adoption, which include compliance and complexity issues, financial and cultural constraints, risk management resources, knowledge and innovation gaps, and risk and stakeholder concerns. The major barrier is indicated to be related to complexity and compliance, followed by finance-related barriers and insufficient risk management capacity. The SEM results corroborate all barriers have a major role in RFID reluctance for adoption (p < 0.05). The paper provides a critical evaluation of the key barriers to RFID adoption in oil and gas construction safety management. The paper makes a novel contribution by integrating different analytical lenses to study the reluctance toward adoption and provides actionable insights for managing such barriers. The paper addresses the gap between the promise potential of RFID technology and its actual implementation in hazardous construction environments. The scope of this study is on oil and gas construction, and outcomes may not directly apply in other sectors. Comparative studies in other sectors, however, can be made in subsequent studies. The effect of policy interventions on RFID uptake in the long term can be analyzed in subsequent studies. The recommendations of this study necessitate policy improvements, government support, organized programs of training, and improved regulatory mechanisms for RFID uptake, which result in safer, more streamlined, and more productive construction practices.
