Co-Incorporation of Chinese Milk Vetch and Rice Straw Increased Phosphorus Bioavailability and Rice Yield

Purpose Green manure can replace partial chemical fertilizers, but its effect on rice yield and soil phosphorus (P) bioavailability after incorporating with rice straw needs to be investigated. Methods A field trial was conducted in Jingzhou, China from 2017 to 2021 with five treatments and three replications. Rice yield, plant P uptake, and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and MBP were measured, meanwhile, soil P bioavailability was evaluated using the biologically based P (BBP) fraction method. Results Co-incorporating Chinese milk vetch (CMV) and rice straw with 50% of regular P fertilizer (MSP50) increased rice straw and grain yield by an average of 21.6% and 7.9%, respectively, over five years compared with P100 treatment. In 2021, P concentration and accumulation of rice grain in MSP50 increased by 11.5% and 30.5%, respectively, compared with that in P100. Citrate-P and HCl-P were the main BBP fractions, with citrate-P positively correlated with soil available P (r = 0.65, P < 0.01). Replacing 50% of P fertilizer reduced soil pH and increasing HCl-P and MBC content at the filling stage, which met the P demand of rice and enhanced soil P pool utilization, especially Ca10-P. Both correlation and RDA analyses showed that MBP and MBC significantly influenced BBP fractions, and thereafter improved P utilization and rice yield. Conclusion This study suggests that replacing 50% of regular P fertilizer input by co-incorporation of CMV and rice straw can enhance the citrate-P and HCl-P utilization, thus maintain P uptake and rice yield during the rice growing season.
