Co-application of Brassinosteroids and Salicylic Acid Improves Drought Tolerance in Pre-Flowering Sorghum Plants

Brassinosteroids (BR) and salicylic acid (SA) are plant regulators that play a role in plant stress tolerance, but their combined role in drought stress response remains unknown. The objective of the research was to assess the protective role of individual application of BR and SA, and their co-application in sorghum plants in the attenuation of water deficit in pre-flowering period. Sorghum plants were grown in pots, subjected to well-watered (WW) and water deficit (WD) treatments, and treated with individual foliar applications of BR (0.1 μM)and SA (1 mM), their co-application (BR + SA), and a control (no bioregulators). Sorghum plants were negatively affected by WD during pre-flowering, especially in the control treatment. However, the application of the bioregulators BR and SA–both individually and in co-application (BR + SA)–alleviated these negative effects. Compared to the control, treatments improved relative water content (RWC) by 52.4% (BR), 38.2% (SA), and 34% (BR + SA), and reduced leaf temperature by 1 °C (BR and SA) and 1.3 °C (BR + SA). Under WD conditions, all treatments with bioregulators maintained higher photochemical efficiency of photosystem II and leaf green intensity index than the control treatment during the water deficit period. In addition, the co-application (BR + SA) performed better than the individual applications in attenuating WD effects on proline content, leaf dry mass, stem dry mass and hundred grain weight. The foliar application of BR and SA, particularly the co-application, improves sorghum performance under water deficit during pre-flowering which suggests the beneficial role of combining these bioregulators in improving crop productivity in drought-prone areas.
