<p>Significant attention has been attracted to surfactants for their effectiveness in facilitating soil contamination remediation. The current research on the use of surfactants in the remediation of petroleum-contaminated soils is reviewed in this paper through the consultation of relevant literature. Key research hotspots are discussed, and the main trends in the field are summarized. It is demonstrated that surfactants have broad application potential in soil remediation. The selection process of surfactants and the implementation plan for field applications are systematically presented, with a separate discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of in-situ versus ex-situ remediation models. The characteristics and hazards of petroleum hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are also reviewed, and the properties and applications of four types of surfactants (non-ionic, ionic, biological, and mixed) are compared, aiding in the selection of effective remediation methods. Finally, the current limitations of remediation technologies are critically assessed, and potential future research directions are proposed.</p>
