<p>Soils where grapevines are grown may not have sufficient available potassium (K) to meet the plants' demands. Potassium fertilizers can address this deficiency. Over the years, these fertilizers can modify the distribution of K fractions in the soil, its availability to grapevines and its budget in vineyard. However, the extent of these phenomena is not yet sufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of K fractions in the soil and the K budget in 'Chardonnay' and 'Pinot' Noir vineyards cultivated in an area with sandy topsoils and a subtropical climate, after 12&#xa0;years of annual potassium fertilization. The K budget was quantified by measuring inputs (potassium fertilizer applications) and outputs (K exported by grape berries). The exchangeable K, non-exchangeable K, structural K, and total K fractions in the soil were determined in an experiment with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir cultivars, without K fertilization and with annual fertilization of 33.21 and 66.41&#xa0;kg&#xa0;ha<sup>–1</sup>&#xa0;K over 12&#xa0;years. The K budget was negative in the soil without K fertilization and positive in the soil with annual fertilization of 33.21 and 66.41&#xa0;kg&#xa0;ha<sup>–1</sup>&#xa0;K. It was also observed that less available K fractions (non-exchangeable K and structural K) contributed to increasing the exchangeable K fraction in the soil without K application. The results suggest that an annual application of 33.21&#xa0;kg&#xa0;ha<sup>–1</sup>&#xa0;K is the most suitable dose to maintain a positive K budget without excessive K in the soil.</p> Graphic Abstract <p></p>
