Members of Enterobacterales Isolated from the Rice-Based Cropping System of the Sub-Himalayan Terai Region Promote Aggregation in Soil and Improve Seed Vigor

The sub-Himalyan terai region of West Bengal, India, falls under the Cwa zone (according to Köppen climate classification). This region experiences high rainfall (> 3500 mm annually), which causes excessive soil erosion, loss of dissolved nutrients, and acidity in the soil. Many unexplored microbes native to this region have unknown ecological functions. This report discusses the order Enterobacterales and its members. Soil metagenome analysis and culture-dependent enumeration and isolation of Enterobacterales were used to determine their population yearly using a bile salt-containing medium. This work was carried out to find if these organisms have any alternate function in preserving the structure of soil and promoting seed vigor. The metagenome analysis from this region displayed the Enterobacterales as the 11th dominant order. Moreover, the dominance of these organisms, pinpoints that the native vegetation supports them in the soil. The results suggested that the presence of Serratia sp. and Enterobacter sp. in soil increased the soil macroaggregate formation due to their EPS-producing nature. Concomitantly, it was found that these bacteria can improve the seed vigor because of their Indole Acetic Acid-producing ability. Though the members of this order contain various bacteria whose presence in the soil indicates fecal contamination, the report lists some interesting functions like P-solubilization, aggregation, and phytohormone production. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report showing the role of Serratia sp. in facilitating aggregate formation in soil.
