<p>The research was carried out to study the effect of cover crops on the biological activity of Haplic Chernozem using No-Till technology between 2021 and 2022 in the south of the steppe zone of Russia on the farm territory with a 14-year No-Till application. In 2021, field modeling experiment was incorporated into the production environment. Cover crops (buckwheat, flax, peas, chickpeas, corn, coriander, sorghum, Sudanese grass, phacelia, mustard, radish) were sown in 9 variants of buckwheat to joint application of all crops. In 2022, a multicomponent mixture of cover crops (buckwheat, flax, peas, chickpeas, corn, coriander, sorghum, Sudanese grass, phacelia, mustard, radish) was sown. The effect of cover crops on the activity of soil enzymes varied depending on hydrothermal conditions. A positive effect (on average 10%) of cover crops was observed on the integral indicator of the biological state of soils (IPBS), including parameters of soil biological activity (intensity of carbon dioxide emission, activity of enzymes of the oxidoreductase and hydrolase groups, as well as the content of total and active carbon). With an increase in the number of species in the cover crops sown in mixture, the phytotoxic effects were decreased. The correlation analysis showed the connection of the integral indicator of biological activity with the general seeding rate of cover crops (<i>r</i> = 0.61).</p>
