Performance of Mustard with Liquid Organic Manures in an Alfisol

In the growing concern about toxic chemical footprint on agro-ecosystem, organic nutrient management is showing good prospects. Specifically, liquid manures can be the potential alternatives of inorganic fertilizers. However, precise information regarding their influence (individually or in combinations) on soil nutrient cycling and microbial dynamics and consequent impact on oilseeds like mustard has been rarely addressed. The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of liquid manures on soil fertility, microbial dynamics and thereby, on performance of mustard. A two-year field experiment in an Alfisol of the eastern Indian plateau (EIP) assessed eight soil treatments' impact on nutrient availability, microbial activity, and performance of Indian mustard. The treatments included application of Jeevamrit, Kunapajala, and Sasyagavya individually and in combination and a control (no liquid manure). All treatments were supplemented with basal vermicompost to enhance soil fertility. Among the tested treatments, application of 33.3% Jeevamrit + 33.3% Kunapajala + 33.3% Sasyagavya was found as the best to positively influence the soil pH, nutrient and microbial dynamics. Furthermore, this treatment outperformed others by ensuring best growth, yield attributes, 147 and 89% higher seed and stover yields, respectively and highest economic profitability. Additionally, it showed crop quality increments (13, 73, and 74% in seed and 81, 86, and 36% in stover nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents, 23, 23, 13 and 10% increase in total soluble solids, total sugar, protein and oil contents of mustard seeds, respectively). The study suggests using a combination of 33.3% Jeevamrit, 33.3% Kunapajala, and 33.3% Sasyagavya for sustainable mustard cultivation in the study region of EIP.
