Sphingidae of the Western ghats: an assessment of their distribution, ecology, and diversity
摘要
This study presents a documentation of 75 Sphingidae species in the Western Ghats of India, based on field visits conducted between 2020 and 2025. (June to February) It evaluates species distribution across different states within the region and compiles data on host plant associations. Notably, species such as Macroglossum faro and M. stellatarum have not been reported from the Western Ghats since 1937 and currently lack photographic records. Additionally, M. mitchelli and M. passalus have been recorded only once, in highly restricted areas, underscoring their potential conservation concern. The study also reveals a significant gap in host plant data for several species, highlighting the urgent need for continuous monitoring and habitat conservation efforts.
