Description of male terminalia of some forensically important flesh fly species (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) from Northwest India

Sarcophagids have consistently played a pivotal role in forensic entomology, as these flies are among the first to arrive at a carcass, following the blowflies. Furthermore, certain species of sarcophagid flies exhibit the unique behavior of laying larvae, making them among the most accessible for rearing and establishing pure colonies, thereby facilitating the investigation of the Postmortem Interval (PMI) with remarkable efficiency. However, the identification of these flies is often confounded by their similar morphological traits, rendering external morphological characterization insufficient. This study endeavored to collect and identify forensically pertinent flesh fly species from northwest India, utilizing pig carcasses (Sus scrofa L.) as a research model during four seasons and under three distinct habitats. Eight species of sarcophagid flies, classified under the subgenus Parsarcophaga Johnston and Tiegs, 1921, were identified: Sarcophaga albiceps Meigen, 1826; Sarcophaga hirtipes Wiedemann, 1830; Sarcophaga misera Walker, 1849; Sarcophaga sericea (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830); as well as species from the subgenus Liosarcophaga Enderlein, 1928, including Sarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) aegyptica Salem, 1935, and Sarcophaga dux Thomson, 1868. Additionally, two species from the genus Boettcherisca Rohdendorf, 1937, namely Boettcherisca bengalensis Nandi, 1992, and Boettcherisca nathani Lopes, 1961, were meticulously gathered from three distinct habitats (indoor, outdoor, and submerged) across four diverse seasons (winter, summer, monsoon, and post-monsoon) during the years 2015 utilizing pig carcasses as a research model. The present work meticulously examines the internal and external terminalia of all aforementioned species, employing their distinctive characteristics for the precise identification of these forensically significant fly species, which are essential for accurate PMI estimation.
