Molecular strategies for crop resistance: advancing plant defense mechanisms against insect herbivores

With global population growth intensifying food security challenges, innovative crop protection strategies are crucial. Traditional crop protection approaches are insufficient to cope with the growing need for agricultural production. Plants have evolved a sophisticated array of defense mechanisms against herbivore attacks, regulated by complex genetic networks that synthesize protective compounds. Despite these natural defenses, persistent challenges remain due to insect adaptations and weakened resistance of crops, necessitating the development of alternative options. This review examines the molecular approaches to enhancing plant resistance, focusing on advanced gene editing technologies such as RNA interference (RNAi) and CRISPR/Cas technologies. Additionally, the review addresses the challenges and field efficacy of these technologies. By exploring these molecular tools, we aim to elucidate potential strategies for developing insect-resistant crops, addressing the critical need for sustainable agricultural solutions.
