Studies on pygmy grasshoppers: notes on the current classification of the subfamily Lophotettiginae (Orthoptera: Tetrigidae), including new taxa
摘要
Recent contributions on tetrigids have introduced the division of the genus Lophotettix Hancock, 1909 into two subgenera, described a species of Phelene Bolívar, 1887, provided data on morphological variability, and included distributional records of species, primarily based on the citizen science platform iNaturalist. However, some inconsistencies remain and are addressed here to resolve certain taxonomic ambiguities. The subgenus Lophotettix (Corticotettix) Kasalo & Skejo, 2022 n. syn. is proposed as a synonym of Lophotettix Hancock 1909 s.s., and Phelen reinschmidti Kasalo, Husemann & Skejo, 2024 n. syn. is proposed as a synonym for Phelene maroon Cadena-Castañeda & Tumbrinck, 2021. The genus Lophotettix is reclassified into two subgenera: Lophotettix (Cristatettix) n. subgen. (including only L. (Cristatettix) zumbadoi (Barranco, 2010) and Lophotettix (Lophotettix) s.s. (grouping the remaining species). A new genus and species, Paralophotettix antennalatus n. gen. et n. sp., is described, and it is confirmed that recent records of Lophotettix brevicristatus Hancock, 1909 actually correspond to the new genus here described. Consequently, the L. brevicristatus distribution is redefined, as it is only known based on the holotype female. It is also proposed as a new combination, Paralophotettix semicristatus (Kasalo & Skejo, 2025) n. comb., originally described in Lophotettix. An updated key for the identification of taxa in the subfamily is provided, along with additional records for Phelene species and P. antennalatus n. gen. et n. sp., based on data from iNaturalist. Finally, the classification, morphology, and diversification of the subfamily are discussed.
