Formulation and assessment of citronella oil-loaded yeast microcapsules as biolarvicides against Aedes aegypti

Microencapsulation is one of the modern techniques being introduced as a delivery vehicle to overcome the high volatility and susceptibility of essential oils to chemical degradation. During the current study, citronella oil-loaded yeast (COY) microcapsules were prepared, charaterized and confirmed by using various analytical techniques. Larvicidal bioassay of COY microcapsules against 3rd /4th instars of Aedes aegypti larvae was performed by testing various concentrations @ 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35 and 0.40 g/100 ml. Among the tested concentrations, 0.35 g/100 ml was found to be the most effective larvicidal concentration having LC50 and LC90 values as 0.16 and 0.34 g/100 ml, respectively. The COY microcapsules retained their larvicidal activity up to 6 months, when stored either at 4 °C or at room temperature. The larvicidal retention efficacy of these microcapsules was found to be 6 days as demonstrated by slow release of oil during the present study. The results obtained during the larvicidal validation study of COY microcapsules performed under simulated trials in small and large containers were at par with that of laboratory trials. Additionally, no adverse effects were observed on non-target organisms (Mesocyclops spp.) upon exposure to the prepared microcapsules. Thus, the present study revealed the potential of COY microcapsules as a safe, effective and sustainable biolarvicide for managing Ae. aegypti population in the aquatic habitats.
