Towards improving acceptance of mosquito control interventions in delta: community knowledge, attitude and practices

Malaria and many arboviruses are vectored by mosquitoes in different endemic regions. The continued spread of these vector-borne diseases could be driven by ineffective insecticide-based control measure due to insufficient assessment of residents’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP), and low adoption of preventive interventions. Therefore, this study was carried out for the first time, to evaluate KAP and acceptance of mosquito control interventions by residents in Delta State, Nigeria. A semi-structured and pre-tested questionnaire comprised of four sections: Socio-demographics, mosquito control intervention methods by respondents, perception and usage of insecticide, and insecticide resistance was administered and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows. The total of 450 households surveyed, majority were ≤ 50 years (75%), with at least a secondary education (55.3%), and lived in two rooms apartment, comprising of a lounge and bedroom (40%) with ≥ 4 individuals living in the apartment. Different control methods were significantly adopted against mosquitoes within the localities (p < 0.05), with over two-third (71.3%) sleeping under Insecticide Treated Bed Nets (ITNs) and 47.8% using insecticide sprays amongst other valid preventive measures. Effectiveness (63.8%) was the major reason for adopting the recommended controls. Mean time span for net usage was 30.4 ± 1.41months with median of 24 months. Most respondents (32.2%) attested that insecticide spraying was effective but with preceding health problems and some respondents had no idea on insecticide sprays (26%). Age, level of education, and type of dwelling insignificantly influenced net usage as mosquito control intervention (p > 0.05). Bed nets among other preventive measures were accepted in the locality, this calls for sustainable deployment of these control tools and more coverage in Delta State.
