<p><i>Vigna unguiculata</i> L. and <i>Phaseolus lunatus</i> L. are legume species of great importance in Mexico’s low-input systems such as Milpa. In these production systems both species are attacked by pests, such as <i>Diabrotica</i> spp. that reduce their yield and farmers do not have the supplies for timely pest management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of landrace accessions of <i>V. unguiculata</i> and <i>P. lunatus</i> against damage caused by <i>Diabrotica</i> spp. in field conditions, through leaf morphology traits, to identify indicators that allow the selection of accessions with a lower level of damage. Both legume species were planted in a randomized complete block design. Leaf damage (LD) and leaf morphological traits: leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), Toughness and thickness were determined. Analysis of variance showed differences among accessions for leaf damage and leaf morphological traits. The PCA analysis allowed identifying accessions 17YUCVA, 04CAMCL, 09CAMES, 07CAMCAL and 12CAMCHAM of <i>V. unguiculata</i> with lower LD related to SLA and accession 13QUICH related to Thickness, while in <i>P. lunatus</i> the accessions with lower LD were JMC1357, JMC1297 and JMC1304 related to Toughness. The defensive response differed among the legumes studied. Leaf morphological traits SLA and Thickness in <i>V. unguiculata</i> and Toughness <i>P. lunatus</i> will serve as morphological markers for the selection of resistant genotypes against <i>Diabrotica</i> spp. and accessions with lower LD can be used in breeding programs.</p>
