Seasonal variations in diversity and abundance of butterfly population: Insights from Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala, India

Understanding the significance of butterflies in an ecosystem as an ecological indicator is crucial to achieve sustainability and biodiversity conservation. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of microvariability and seasonal fluctuations in the butterfly population in the Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary area. A total of 1751 individuals belonging to 42 species from five families and 25 genera were recorded. Nymphalidae was the most dominant family, with 16 species, followed by Papilionidae (8 species), Pieridae (7 species), Hespiriidae (6 species) and Lycaenidae (5 species). By pooling the generated data, the overall butterfly population showed a decreasing trend from December (2019) to May (2020), with many butterfly populations having an average sighting in February, a minimum in April and a maximum in December. The study also demonstrated a decrease in butterfly abundance with less rainfall and greater temperature. The highest species richness and abundance were reported during the winter season. During the winter season, 33 species with 847 individuals were recorded. The spring season is a transitional season between winter and summer. The least 20 species with 371 individuals were sighted during summer. Therefore, the abundance pattern correlated with climatic factors such as temperature, solar radiation, wind speed and humidity.
