<p>The state of Chiapas is one of the regions with the highest butterfly richness in Mexico; however, the number of studies on Papilionoidea biodiversity in this state remains insufficient. Monthly sampling was carried out for one year to analyze the temporal distribution of diurnal butterflies in the tropical sub-deciduous forest of Cañón del Sumidero National Park, in the central region of Chiapas, Mexico. A total of 1,771 individuals of 113 species and 73 genera belonging to the families Lycaenidae, Nymphalidae, Papilionidae, Pieridae, and Riodinidae were collected. The community presented a high dominance of a few species, with a total of 40 species (34.5%) represented by one (singletons) or two individuals (doubletons). The temporal dynamics of butterflies did not exhibit a uniform pattern in their distribution. Furthermore, monthly precipitation levels showed no significant correlation with species richness or individual counts. However, three virtual temporal communities were identified (β = 3.4). The lack of marked temporal segregation differs from the general pattern for butterfly communities, suggesting that their behavior is more complex. These results are significant because they offer a better understanding of ecological aspects of the diurnal butterfly communities in Chiapas, which is considered one of the most diverse and important in Mexico, but that has been poorly analyzed in the regional context.</p>
