Effect of three plant-based food sources on some biological parameters and microbiological quality of Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer (Orthoptera: Gryllidae)

Consumption and breeding of insects are increasingly encouraged to diversify food protein sources. However, the cost of feed is a factor that slows down the spread of insect breeding. This research aimed to assess the potential of three plants: Commelina benghalensis, Talinum triangulare and Tridax procumbens, as alternative feeding substrates, able to replace a conventional substrate while ensuring optimal development of the black cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus in breeding. The three plants were compared to a control meal feed made of agricultural by-products, in a breeding test during which the survival rate and growth of the crickets were observed. The most promising plant was then compared to the control for an evaluation of survival, fecundity of adult crickets, and the presence of certain harmful microorganisms after frying the crickets. All experiments were conducted following a completely randomized design. In the first test, C. benghalensis allowed a survival rate of 27.02%, compared to 62.24% for the classic food. The leaves of T. triangulare and T. procumbens led to very low survival rates (less than 5%) and low weight gain. For the following tests, adult crickets fed with C. benghalensis leaves showed greater mortality in a relatively short time. The microbial load of the in the fried crickets was below the detection threshold (30CFU/g) regardless of the treatment. However, even though C. benghalensis was accepted by the crickets as compared to other plants, none of the tested plants can be used as a food substitute.
