A scientometric analysis of global research on mealybugs and trends in control measures (1996–2022)

A scientometric search was performed using the keyword "Mealybugs". There are 1,898 documents related to mealybug research published between 1996 and 2022 in the Web of Science database. In this study, most publishing authors, cited authors, publishing countries, prolific journals, institutions, conferences held, research areas, languages, and document types were noticed. Bibliometric networks of authors, organizations, and countries were observed via VOSviewer. Mealybugs are very difficult to control because of their polyphagous nature, ease of spreading, capacity to adapt in newer environments, waxy coverings, hidden lifestyle, sexual dimorphism and association with ants.These structural, physiological and behavioural adaptations enable mealybugs to escape from a single mode of pest control. Hence, mealybugs have been considered as "hard to kill" pest. The integrated pest management is probably effective against mealybugs. The intensive research on the diversity of mealybugs, mealybug and host-plant interaction, identification of sex pheromones, mating disruption, identification of natural enemies and parasitoids, kairomones, ant-mealybug interaction, virus-mealybug interaction, microbiome analysis, host plant sap chemistry, behaviour and wax chemistry in relevance to host plants would helpful to frame multi-approach to control mealybugs. A framing approach for careful monitoring specific to mealybugs in quarantine would be beneficial to the spreading of mealybugs globally. As VOSviewer observed, establishing more research collaboration among the countries would help to manage mealybugs effectively and save farmers with sustainable agriculture.
