Assessing the impact of bifenthrin, neonicotinoids, and insect growth regulators on three aphid species and their predators in Brassica fields: implications for pest management strategies

Aphids (Aphididae; Hemiptera) are key pests of Brassica crops around the globe. Chemicals with diverse modes of action are applied to manage aphids mainly conventional, neonicotinoids, insect growth regulators (IGRs). However, there is little published research with respect to evaluating impact of these chemical groups on aphids and their predators from open fields. Here we quantified the effect of imidacloprid, acetamiprid, bifenthrin, buprofezin and pyriproxyfen from the experiments conducted at Multan, Pakistan, on Brevicoryne brassicae L., Lipaphis pseudobrassicae (Davis) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and their predators on Brassica juncea L. and Brassica napus L. Bifenthrin and imidacloprid were more toxic to all the aphid species and two predatory taxa i.e. coccinellid and syrphids. Acetamiprid and IGRs had intermediate toxicity for aphids; however, both the IGRs treated plots conserved predators. We suggest that IGRs should be applied to manage aphids on Brassica, when more activity of coccinellids and syrphids is noticed. However, when natural enemies are less active, the most effective imidacloprid can be applied as this insecticide resulted in the highest cost benefit ratio. We also discuss implications of our results for managing aphids on Brassica crops.
