The seagrass-bacteria interface: diversity, functional roles, and biotechnological prospects

Seagrasses are marine flowering plants that form ecologically critical habitats along coastlines worldwide. While they are well recognized for their roles in carbon sequestration, sediment stabilization and biodiversity support, the bacterial communities associated with seagrasses is still inadequately understood, particularly in tropical regions. This review highlights the diversity, ecological functions and emerging biotechnological applications of seagrass associated bacteria. It explore the distinct bacterial communities inhabiting the rhizosphere, phyllosphere and endosphere of seagrasses, with a focus on their contributions to pharmaceutical, enzymes, bioremediation and biofertilizers and biostimulants. Particular attention is given to phylum Actinomycetota, as prolific producers of bioactive compounds with environmental sustainability and biotechnological potential. Future research directions is proposed to harness these microbiomes for ecosystem resilience and sustainable bioprospecting. By integrating microbial ecology with biotechnology, this review positions seagrass associated bacteria as key players in marine health and promising sources of novel natural products.
