<p>The continuous search and characterization of germplasm collections for different phenotypic, nutritional, and physiological traits under varying locations is essential for future pea breeding. Vegetable pea is economically important crop of Bundelkhand region, but farmers are not able to take the maximum benefits due to lack of substantial research. The present investigation was executed using a total of 99 vegetable pea indigenous and exotic collections including landraces, local collections to analyze the genetic variability and classify the potential parents for pea breeding in hot arid region. The experiment was conducted in an augmented block design and data was recorded on 14 agro-morphological, and 9 nutritional and quality traits. The variance analysis and mean performance revealed substantial variation among the studied germplasm for different phenotypic and nutritional quality traits. Higher magnitude of genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), heritability and genetic advance indicated ample scope of improvement in vegetable pea through selection. The trait association analysis indicated significant positive correlation between pod yield and component traits, including number of pods per plant, 10 pod weight and number of seeds per pod. The cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) analysis grouped the germplasm collections into four distinct clusters and identified five components that explained over 76% of total variation. The local collection RLBGP 547 was identified as an ideal parent for breeding high yielding cultivars, and RLBGP 150-5 and EC598684, was found to be best for nutritional traits. The current study paves the way for vegetable pea breeding in Bundelkhand region.</p>
