Direct analysis saffron chemical test ‘DASCT’: a low-cost and rapid authentication method for detecting fake saffron

Saffron is expensive and is prone to white-collar fraud. The present study provides a set of three simple tests–Suspension test, Methanol wash test, and Direct Analysis Saffron Chemical Test (DASCT)–to identify fake/genuine saffron. Among these, DASCT is the most comprehensive test and was used to develop a kit that any customer can use to verify the authenticity of a dry saffron sample. The method screens random samples for colour changes with the naked eye. The method utilises four low-cost chemicals–water, methanol, sulphuric acid, and ortho-phosphoric acid–and a colour card for visual comparison and detecting colour changes in genuine saffron. The DASCT method’s main advantages are its real-time application, speed, and affordability. It can be used by experts working in technical laboratories and can supplement ISO standards as an easy method for detecting fake/ genuine saffron filaments in 25–30 min. The collection of three tests described herein shall serve as an additional check against fraudsters who manage to obtain fake holograms/certifications for ‘look-alikes of saffron’ and sell these fake products in the unorganised sector, while evading detection by law enforcement institutions. Furthermore, genuine retailers can verify the authenticity of their products using these tests and the DASCT-based kit, thereby promoting genuine retail business.
