Global genecological status of vulnerable Dalbergia latifolia: need to introspect the conservation perspectives

AbstractThe Dalbergia latifolia is distributed predominantly in deciduous forests of Asian, African, and American subcontinents. It has gained acceptance as an agroforestry tree variety, possessing luxury wood traits. In addition, the species has also proven its vigour through adaptiveness to the broad range of environmental and pedospheric conditions. Nevertheless, D. latifolia has some shortcomings as revealed by our meta-analytical review, including its requirement of partial shade and well-drained soil conditions to thrive well. The harsh climatic conditions, mostly drought and extreme light environments induce stunted growth and crooked branches which is quite worrisome. The prevailing inadequacies of D. latifolia make it vulnerable to current and rising ecological dangers, which could lead to species extinction in the approaching future. Since the species is outcrossing in nature, it would be wise to introspect and frame up the conservation mechanisms embracing the assessment of genetic variability, regeneration issues, phenological determinants, pollinators mechanism, pathogenicity and most importantly abiotic stress resilience. Recent studies, emphasize the importance of the genetic variability assessments within the genus Dalbergia, revealing a gap in knowledge regarding D. latifolia populations and highlighting conservation challenges. The expanding global climatic conditions such as intensifying temperature and carbon dioxide levels have witnessed changes in the developmental pattern of several forestry species that have negatively impacted the carbon residential potential and growth pattern in tropical forestry species. These findings contribute to our understanding of the genetic makeup of Dalbergia species, aiding conservation and breeding efforts, but also underscore the need for comprehensive management strategies to address limited gene flow and population structure issues. As D. latifolia is prone to considerable ecological changes, our review highlights the geographical adaptability, morphological traits, phenology, silvicultural practices, agronomic benefits and molecular research. Based on comprehensive analysis, the research gaps have been identified and well-founded technological strategies have been formulated for the conservation mechanism of the species across different agro-ecological zones that could also be implemented for safeguarding similar species.
