First report and molecular characterisation of banana bunchy top virus infecting Musa × Paradisiaca Cv. Chiniya from West Bengal, India
摘要
Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV), a major threat to banana production, was detected and characterized in the local Chiniya (AAB) cultivar from Malda, West Bengal, India. This study aimed to detect BBTV in local germplasm and study its diversity in the area. BBTV infection was confirmed in symptomatic samples of Musa × paradisiaca cv. Chiniya using PCR. Sequence analysis revealed the pairwise identity of 90–98.73% and 92–97.04% for DNA-R and DNA-S, respectively, with isolates from around the world. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the sequences diversity of BBTV- Chiniya West Bengal isolate compared to previously reported isolates from the West Bengal. This study highlights the presence of BBTV in the local Chiniya cultivar in northern West Bengal and underscores the importance of continued monitoring of BBTV isolates for effective disease management strategies. Further research is needed to explore the complete genetic diversity of BBTV isolates in India and identify potential resistance sources among local banana cultivars. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of BBTV infecting M. × paradisiaca cv. Chiniya as a natural host of BBTV from West Bengal, India.
