摘要

The present review essay of the six-volume “A Global History of Crime and Punishment” (Bloomsbury Academic) highlights the inconsistency of the volumes in terms of content and methodology despite their uniform outward appearance and their global claim. Many contributions offer valuable insights but neglect global or at least transnational comparison. The scarce integration of non-English-speaking research and the lack of definition of terminology and central categories are also criticised. Despite these shortcomings many contributions provide valuable insights and original research, particularly on non-European criminal justice systems. However, the series fails to serve as a comprehensive handbook.
