Avatar Influence and Cognitive Performance in a Virtual Spacecraft Environment: A Pilot Study

Government space agencies, such as NASA and ESA, have significant experience training astronauts, but this experience may not be adequate to support Exploration Class Missions (ECMs). International Space Station (ISS) astronauts spend years training before being assigned a mission and spend 30 months of training for that mission. In the event of a contingency onboard the ISS, Mission Control can guide every action the crew takes, and they can monitor onboard systems. But during ECMs, communication delays will curtail Mission Control’s ability to provide continuous support from the ground and real-time communication will not be possible. Thus, training astronauts for these missions must be modified from current training paradigms. Because not all events can be anticipated in advance, the development of performance support tools must be developed for events the crew does not have the opportunity to receive training for before operations or for skills that have decayed. The question is what is the most effective performance support tool? Simulation is a well-established training method, especially for procedures that may be required in a spaceflight environment. Virtual reality (VR) affords innovative training methods that can be applied to such environments. That is because VR allows the user to interact with a simulation of a real environment, in real time, using their senses and motor skills. Another question of interest is if cognitive metrics correlate with task performance. To that end, this study compared the effectiveness of just-in-time training (JITT) delivered via VR to JITT delivered via VR using an avatar and investigated the correlation of specific cognitive metrics with this training.
