The Effect of Different Types of Collectors on the Flotation of Flake Graphite

In order to study the effects of collectors and emulsified collectors on flake graphite flotation, kerosene was used as a reference collector, and phenylhexane, n-dodecane and diethyl phthalate with 12 carbon atoms and respective molecular structures were selected as the experimental collectors. Emulsified collector was prepared by high-speed stirring method with Tween80 as an emulsifier. Flotation experiments of graphite coarse concentrate and open circuit experiments of graphite ore were conducted with collectors and emulsified collectors respectively. The experimental results show that the concentrate recovery rate using four collectors and emulsified collectors follows the order: diethyl phthalate > n-dodecane > phenylhexane > kerosene. There is a significant difference between the concentrate recovery rates using four collectors in flotation, while there is a smaller difference between the concentrate recovery rates using four emulsified collectors. The smaller the concentrate recovery rate using the collector, the greater the improvement of that using the emulsified collector. In the open circuit experiment, with the increase of cleaner stages, the recovery rate difference between the emulsified collector and the collector increases, and that between the normal dosage and the reduced dosage emulsified collector gradually increases also, indicating that emulsified collectors have greater advantages in later cleaner stages. The principle of the emulsified collectors promoting graphite flotation is explained from the analysis of infrared spectroscopy, surface potential and adsorption capacity.
