<p>This paper investigates the impact of using green alternatives as a tool for the assessment and justification of strategic mine planning decisions. In the authors experience, strategic mine planning decisions have not considered the impact of the carbon emissions produced by the site at either a strategic or operational level, let alone at the study level. This paper will take into consideration a case study of the Challenger Gold Limited, Hualilan Project Scoping Study [<CitationRef CitationID="CR1">1</CitationRef>], where strategic decisions were made by the study team to consider the use of green alternatives in the area of fuel and electricity supply. The case study will delve into the impacts on the site’s carbon footprint with varying power and fuel use considerations and relating this to the impact that these decisions have on the strategic mine planning decision. The comparison was made by utilising a first principals’ assessment of the Hualilan project. This made it possible to quantify the overall carbon footprint of the prospective project (the project) by assessing each contribution using emissions factors, to report a carbon intensity per ounce of gold produced.</p>
