Using AR-based secondary tasks to enhance user cognitive focus in monitoring tasks within intelligent workplaces

Intelligent technologies are transforming human workers’ roles from active task executors to passive supervisors. In monitoring tasks, this shift can lead to boredom and reduced focus. Augmented reality (AR) has the potential to mitigate these effects by introducing multimodal interactions. This study designed an AR-based secondary task within a primary monitoring task and investigated its effects on task performance, task engagement, state boredom, task load, and frontal lobe brain activity. A simulated intelligent monitoring experiment was conducted with thirty-five participants, using electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements. The results showed that the AR-based secondary task marginally reduced state boredom during monitoring. Furthermore, AR usage did not impair task performance and only led to a partially and marginally significant increase in task load. Also, theta power in Brodmann area 10 (BA10) was found significantly higher when participants were engaged in an AR-based secondary task, which may reflect a tendency for AR-based secondary tasks to help sustain attention. Overall, these findings suggest that AR could be a promising tool for supporting cognitive focus in monitoring tasks within intelligent workplaces without substantially increasing task load.
