Genotypic variability analysis of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) for agronomic and quality traits at Holetta, central highland of Ethiopia

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is an herbaceous, tuber-producing plant that belongs to the Solanaceae family. It is one of the non-cereal food crops used for multiple purposes, notably to enhance food security and income generation in Ethiopia. However, its productivity and processing quality are strongly influenced by the genetic variability among genotypes. This study was conducted to evaluate variability among potato genotypes on agronomic traits, postharvest quality attributes, tuber yield, and yield components at the research farm of Holetta. Twenty-four genotypes were assessed, of which 20 were selected from germplasm introduced from the International Potato Center and four released varieties as standard checks: Belete and Dagim for yield potential, while Jalenie and Local (Ater Ababa) were susceptible to late blight. The experiment was arranged in RCBD with three replications. Tubers were planted at 0.75 m between rows and 0.30 m between plants. Findings revealed highly significant differences (p < 0.01) among genotypes for most traits, except ground coverage and tuber pH, which differed significantly ( P ≤ 0.05). Genotypes CIP-313033.114 and CIP-313038.3 produced the highest total tuber yields of 36.54 t ha−1and 34.40 t ha−1, respectively, outperforming the standard checks and exhibiting strong resistance to late blight. Six genotypes were found to be promising based on DMC and SG that may satisfy the industrial requirements. These findings confirm the existence of substantial genetic variability among potato genotypes, indicating their potential for potato improvement and processing industries in Ethiopia, and emphasize the importance of multi-location and multi-season evaluations to identify stable, high-yielding, and processing-quality genotypes for Ethiopia’s potato production systems.
