Analysis of phytochemical composition, antioxidant and anti-hyperglycemic efficacy of different parts of Salacia chinensis L.

Salacia chinensis L. (Celastraceae), is a significant antidiabetic plant extensively used in ayurvedic formulations. In the current study, the variability of chemical compositions in different parts and its inhibitory actions against the α-amylase enzyme and free radical scavenging were investigated. This was the first time that the metabolites screening in different plant parts of S. chinensis was highlighted utilizing LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry) Q-TOF (Quadrupole Time-of-Flight). Resulting spectra revealed a total of 68 phytochemical components. The chemical components were distributed as 18 components in the root, 21 in the stem and 29 compounds in the leaf extract were recorded. The observed metabolites were derived from amino acids, lignans, terpenes, flavonoids, and phenolics. Among the chemical components, total 10 compounds in root, 9 in stem and 19 in leaves were unique to that particular part. Salacinol, kotalanol, and mangiferin were the main bioactive ingredients identified in S. chinensis and were detected by HR-MS (High Resolution Mass Spectrometry). It was found that root bark has the highest mangiferin content (154.8 µg/g DW). Various plant parts showed varying levels of mangiferin. Along with this, anti-hyperglycemic and antioxidant properties were also evaluated of different plant parts. The biological activities can be attributed to the presence of phytochemicals in different parts. The plant parts could serve as source of bioactive ingredients with potential medicinal applications.
