Potential application of artificial intelligence in building information modeling: current state, challenges, and opportunities
摘要
Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine with Building Information Modeling (BIM) is revolutionizing the construction industry by providing innovative solutions for design and operational challenges. AI-driven algorithms, such as generative design, enable optimized building layouts and energy-efficient designs, while ML enhances project management by predicting delays and resource shortages. These technologies improve construction efficiency and cost-effectiveness through data-driven decision-making, while AI-driven simulations support sustainability by optimizing energy consumption and reducing environmental impacts. However, challenges such as unstructured and inconsistent data hinder seamless AI integration in BIM, making interoperability across BIM platforms essential for widespread adoption. This study provides a comprehensive overview of recent AI and ML applications in BIM, exploring their synergy, impact on decision-making, sustainability contributions, and associated challenges. The growing demand for professionals bridging the gap between construction and data science highlights the need for specialized training programs. As AI and ML evolve, they will play a crucial role in shaping smart cities by optimizing building performance, enhancing sustainability, and improving resilience. AI-powered BIM systems will enable real-time monitoring of energy usage and occupancy patterns, facilitate predictive maintenance, and automate construction tasks to enhance collaboration among stakeholders. The continuous advancement of AI and ML will further transform building design and construction, unlocking new possibilities for smarter, more sustainable infrastructure.
