Systematic review of innovations in food packaging with a focus on circularity and the reduction of food loss and waste

This study analyzes food packaging innovations that promote circularity and contribute to reducing food loss and waste across the production chain. A systematic review was conducted using StArt software to identify and organize relevant scientific publications. Based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 26 articles were selected and analyzed across four categories established in this study: types of packaging innovation, definitions of circular and/or sustainable packaging, examples of innovative and sustainable packaging, and the relationship between innovative food packaging, the Circular Economy (CE), and efforts to reduce food loss and waste (FLW). The publications reviewed date from 2015 onward and consist primarily of literature reviews and experimental studies. A higher concentration of studies was observed in developed countries, particularly in Europe. The results highlight sustainable food packaging alternatives, classified as active, intelligent, and compostable packaging, as innovative solutions to replace conventional plastic packaging. Moreover, the findings demonstrate that the use of sustainable and environmentally friendly materials in food packaging contributes to reducing FLW while advancing the principles of a CE. Finally, the review identifies the need for future research to further explore sustainable packaging in the context of FLW reduction, with a particular focus on practical applications of CE principles.
