Reduced pesticide dependency through crop management

The persistent overuse of synthetic pesticides in agriculture has triggered ecological degradation, human health risks, and pest resistance, demanding urgent systemic change. This paper examines how integrated crop management—through agroecological diversification, chemical innovation, and biopesticide adoption—can reduce pesticide dependency while sustaining productivity. We synthesize findings from recent field studies and chemical ecology literature, with case studies from Cambodia, Bangladesh, and Europe. These examples illustrate measurable reductions in pesticide use (up to 61%) and maintenance or improvement of yields. The review highlights plant secondary metabolites, biological signaling compounds, and microbial-based pesticides as key components of environmentally responsive pest management. A conceptual framework is proposed to guide the integration of these strategies within a broader sustainable agriculture agenda. This analysis offers evidence-based pathways to shift from reactive chemical reliance toward ecologically grounded, resilient farming systems.
