AI and Education for Planetary Flourishing: Towards Earth-Alignment

This article examines the assumptions underlying AI’s imagined role in education amid deepening social, political, and ecological destabilization by mapping four future imaginaries: AI as a technological solution, AI as an existential threat, human-centered AI, and Earth-aligned AI. While each imaginary surfaces important considerations, the first three risk reproducing the same modern patterns of human exceptionalism that have created a misalignment between prevailing educational paradigms and planetary flourishing. The article explores the fragile possibility of an Earth-aligned approach to AI and education by outlining a provisional set of capacities for navigating systemic instability with humility, discernment, and responsibility. It concludes with a speculative vignette illustrating how such an approach might reorient learning away from mastery and efficiency toward relational accountability within living systems.
