Determinant of Place Attachment and Conditions of Living in Albouystown Community, Georgetown, Guyana

Housing environmental conditions mirror housing standards, the quality of the (given) residential area, urban development, the planning process of the area, and facility allocation mechanisms. Several studies focused on developing nations have been conducted on housing environmental conditions where inadequate methods and systems for land distribution, poor funding, mortgage financing, and infrastructure development have been blamed for poor housing and environmental outcomes. However, very little research has been undertaken on the determinants of housing and environmental conditions in urban areas of Guyana. This study examines the factors which contribute to the habitation of poor housing and environmental conditions in Albouystown, an inner-city area of Georgetown, Guyana. Using a survey research design, a questionnaire supplemented by an observation checklist was administered to 128 (10%) household heads in the community. Structured interviews were conducted with key members of the community. From the findings, mean years of residency and income in Albouystown were found to be 15.7 ± 11.88 years and $87,000 ± 56,833.5 per month, respectively. About 93.0% of respondents were living in poor housing and environmental conditions. The majority (72.0%) of the respondents live in single-parent or extended households that are overcrowded and from which waste is not efficiently managed. With some variations across age groups, years of residency, familial ties, insufficient income, cheap rents, homeownership and closeness to the city centre were found to be the factors that were responsible for an individual’s place attachment to poor housing and environmental conditions. The study advocates for the provision of community upgrading programmes through rehabilitation and regeneration approaches, the provision of urban basic services, and community-focused employment generation activities to address the area’s prevailing housing and environmental conditions.
