Impact on Community Well-Being Through Technology Intervention for Sustainable Bamboo Processing Practice – The DMADC Methodology
摘要
Bamboo processing is a non-timber agro-based industry that supports the underprivileged sections of society in making a living. This work takes an industrial engineering practices approach to enhance the livelihood of the women of the rural sections of society. This is done with technology intervention through application of machinery for a sustainable bamboo processing practice. The DMADC (Define-Measure-Analyse-Design-Control) methodology is adopted to realize a noticeable improvement in the livelihoods of the rural society at India. The detailed process FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) is performed to enhance the value chain of bamboo products right from the processing stage. The corrective actions are recommended as per the RPNs (Risk Priority Numbers) obtained. The concept of PM analysis (Physical Mechanism analysis) about the TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) is extended for a trainer-trainee interface of knowledge exchange. An improvement in livelihoods, with more than 175 families trained in bamboo processing skill, is witnessed through this work by enabling the women in rural households to be more self-sufficient. 600 individual beneficiaries from the region are benefitted from around 20 villages. The beneficiaries are trained in technology intervention for various bamboo processing stages enabling them to make around 800 numbers of various bamboo prototypes. The total revenue generated by one household from the prototypes made in this vocational training period was worth Indian National Rupees, INR 60,000 within 2 years of the starting of this bamboo processing project. This vocational training in bamboo processing is funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The project is experimented and confined to Rajam mandal of India. The Common Facility Centre (CFC) established through this project is proposed to be handed over to the beneficiaries for sustained improvement of the livelihoods and household income.
