Pilot acceptance of physiological monitoring devices in single pilot operations: a mixed methods study using focus groups and survey analysis

In the context of Single Pilot Operations (SPO), physiological monitoring of pilots is crucial for ensuring flight safety. This study explores pilots’ acceptance of various types of physiological monitoring devices through a mixed approach combining focus group interviews and structured questionnaire. Initially, focus group interviews were conducted to capture pilots’ preliminary perceptions and key concerns regarding such devices. Subsequently, a structured questionnaire was developed based on the interview findings and distributed on a large scale among the pilot community to quantify acceptance patterns across different device types. In terms of data analysis, this study builds upon traditional statistical methods by incorporating association rule mining to identify hidden patterns within the survey results, thereby enabling a deeper understanding of the key factors influencing pilot acceptance. The findings indicate that pilots’ acceptance of physiological monitoring devices is primarily influenced by factors such as wear location, comfort, operational interference, and data privacy. In response to these factors, the design of future physiological monitoring devices for SPO should be optimized and improved in the following key areas: (1) enhance the comfort and stability of wearable devices to prevent interference with flight operations; (2) promote the integration of monitoring devices with existing communication, display, and other modules; (3) establish comprehensive data privacy protection mechanisms to strengthen pilots’ trust in the devices.
