Identification of the characteristics of pilot control actions in a multichannel control task with cross-coupling

Flight safety is the most important requirement for the design of aircraft and their control systems. One of the most difficult tasks for the pilot is the task of multichannel control, which is characterized by a significant workload of the pilot, due to the distribution of the pilot’s attention, as well as the presence of cross-coupling between control channels, the influence of which the pilot seeks to compensate. In this regard, there is a need for a detailed study of the pilot’s control actions when performing such tasks. This paper presents a study of pilot control actions in a multichannel control task, considers a method for identifying the pilot’s describing functions in a two-channel control task with interpolation of frequency responses over a common frequency range, obtains a condition for ensuring the independence of control channels, and examines the influence of cross-coupling dynamics on its implementation.
