摘要

Cholera is resurging in numerous African countries including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and Sudan, with high case fatality rate. Its spread to extended regions has confused containment efforts and strained fragile health system. The factors behind the crises could be civil unrest, border conflicts, mass displacement, poverty and natural disaster. Climate change and global warming further increase the concerns. Given its severity, scale and interconnectedness, the risk of the spread within and across nations is high and imminent. Current cholera outbreak overburdens the fragile African healthcare system, exacerbated by concurrent occurrences of dengue, measles, chikungunya and mpox. Multidimensional approach against cholera including political commitment towards effective public health legislation was required to combat and eradicate it in Africa. These include actions against practices that aggravate cholera outbreak, water purification, hygiene standards, social mobilisation and voluntary oral cholera immunisation. Strong surveillance measures, early detection, prompt reporting and coordinated response mechanisms across international borders are urgently needed to counter cross-border transmission.
