摘要

Introduction

Ileo-appendiceal knotting is an exceedingly rare cause of small bowel obstruction, caused by the encirclement of the ileum around the appendix. This condition is difficult to diagnose due to non-specific clinical signs.

Case Presentation

A 55-year-old female presented with acute abdominal pain, vomiting, and distension. Physical examination revealed signs of peritonitis. Imaging suggested small bowel obstruction. Intraoperatively, the appendix was found wrapped around the distal ileum causing ischemia. A limited ileal resection and appendectomy were performed. Postoperative recovery was uneventful.

Conclusion

Though rare, Ileo-appendiceal knotting should be considered in patients with unexplained small bowel obstruction. Early recognition and prompt surgical intervention are crucial to prevent complications.
