Prevalence of Urinary Tract Infections and Health-Related Quality of Life among T2DM Patients using SGLT-2 Inhibitors in North India: A Cross-Sectional study
摘要
This study aims to investigate the prevalence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by identifying risk factors that may contribute to their occurrence in patients treated with sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors, with a particular focus on the Indian Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) population.
MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 376 patients with T2DM from the Integral Institute of Medical Science and Research (IIMSR), Lucknow. The data was collected from December 2023 to February 2025. The enrolled participants were T2DM patients taking SGLT-2 inhibitors for at least three months. Detailed medical histories and UTI symptoms were noted from patient records to evaluate UTI prevalence. Additionally, during their visits, patients received counselling on maintaining proper genital hygiene to help prevent the recurrence of infections.
ResultsA total of 376 patients were considered, out of which 181(48.13%) were commenced on Dapagliflozin while 34 (9.04%) patients were commenced on Empagliflozin,142 (37.76%) patients were on Canagliflozin and 19 (5.05%) patients were on Remogliflozin. Out of the total patients, 160 (42.66%) were male and 216 (57.44%) were female. The total number of UTI cases reported in the drugs dapagliflozin, canagliflozin and empagliflozin was 31, 22 and 6, respectively. The prevalence of UTI in patients taking dapagliflozin, canagliflozin and empagliflozin was reported to be 17.12%, 15.49%, and 17.64%, respectively.
ConclusionThe study highlights a prevalence of UTIs among T2DM patients using SGLT-2 inhibitors. These findings underscore the importance of patient education and awareness on genital hygiene to mitigate UTI risk during SGLT-2 inhibitors therapy in the Indian population.
