Survival Analysis in Cancer Research: A Bibliometric Study (2005–2024)

In cancer epidemiology, survival analysis is crucial for monitoring disease progression, therapeutic evaluation, and prognosis assessment. Despite its significance, a comprehensive bibliometric study of global research trends in survival analysis connected to cancer epidemiology has not been done yet. This work sought to examine publication trends, authorship patterns, institutional contributions, and main research issues in survival analysis applied to cancer epidemiology.
MethodsA bibliometric study of PubMed-indexed papers from 2005 to 2024 was performed using VOS viewer and Bibliometrix in R. The research used co-word analysis and bibliographic coupling to delineate the conceptual framework and research trends within the discipline.
ResultsA total of 9840 publications were discovered, demonstrating an increasing trend in research production over time. The USA and China emerged as the primary contributors, with prominent institutes such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The predominant terms were “survival,” “prognosis,” and “overall survival,” underscoring the primary focal areas. Network visualization elucidated prominent authors and clusters of research topics, demonstrating robust worldwide partnerships in high-impact research.
ConclusionThese bibliometric insights may help researchers and research managers prioritize collaborations, methods training, and topic development in survival-focused oncology. Policymakers can utilize these bibliometric insights to strategically allocate resources, foster international partnerships, and support infrastructure advancements in cancer epidemiology research. Translation to clinical practice requires dedicated evidence syntheses and trials beyond the scope of this descriptive study.
