摘要

Background

Melanoma is a malignancy that originates in melanocytes, primarily manifesting as cutaneous melanoma on the skin. Mucosal melanomas are a subset of melanocytic lesions with similar aggressive behavior with poor prognosis but have different molecular, epidemiological, and clinicopathological features.

Case Presentation

A 64-year-old female presented with complaints of hematochezia for 4–5 years. On sigmoidoscopy, there is a globular lesion with blackish discoloration measuring 10 cm in the rectum. Sigmoid colon and descending colon show no endoscopically discernible lesions. Colonoscopic biopsy was taken from the lesion and sent for routine HPE examination.

Discussion

Anorectal mucosal melanoma is a rare entity among the melanomas, being aggressive in behavior and prone to early and distant metastasis. Routine HPE examination and ancillary histotechniques (melanin bleach, special stain—Masson Fontana) will help in arriving at the correct diagnosis.
