Climate-adaptive agroforestry: restoring marginal lands for fuel, food, and nutrition security

Land degradation is one of the critical environmental concerns experienced globally due to the burgeoning population and its tipping need for food, fodder, and fuels. Various drivers of degradation, such as agricultural extensification and deforestation, have triggered the loss of different ecosystem services. To this, ‘climate-adaptive agroforestry’ practices could be one of the effective strategies to restore and manage neglected land resources and ensure food security in developing countries like India. Besides, agroforestry systems (AFS) hold vast potential to increase the carbon pool (from 0.25 to 19.14 ton C ha− 1 yr− 1) from trees, mitigate emissions from conventional agriculture, enhance the system’s adaptive capacity, and often provisioned with biomass and bioenergy. Moreover, assuring nutrition security is also one of the prime targets under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs). To this, the present opinion is aimed to highlight a few potential climate-adaptive AFS from the different regions. Furthermore, it also tries to discuss the holistic approach regarding such AFS promoted on marginal and degraded lands for integrated provisioning of fuels, food, and nutrition at the national and regional scales, thereby meeting multiple UN-SDGs.
