Athelia rolfsii causing pseudostem rot in banana (Musa spp.) in Nepal
摘要
Banana cultivation, spanning over 23,000 hectares in Nepal, faces significant threats from fungal diseases. In 2023, a severe stem rot disease was observed in the Silk banana cv. Malbhog in Nawalpur district, characterized by leaf yellowing, pseudostem splitting, and sheath rot with white mycelia and sclerotia. Through morphological, molecular, and phylogenetic analyses, the causal agent was identified as Athelia rolfsii, and its pathogenicity was confirmed by Koch’s postulates. This marks the first documented case of A. rolfsii infecting banana in Nepal. Given bananas’ economic importance, this finding is critical for implementing targeted disease management to protect the crop.
