<p>Begomoviruses represent a major group of plant viruses, accounting for nearly 85% of the species reported within the family <i>Geminiviridae</i>. They are transmitted by the whitefly <i>Bemisia tabaci</i>, pose a significant threat to vegetable crops in India, with weeds serving as key reservoirs for their perpetuation and evolution. This study aimed to characterize begomoviruses infecting weed hosts associated with vegetable ecosystems in the Varanasi region of Uttar Pradesh and to examine their genetic relationships with known begomoviruses. Total DNA extracted from six weed species exhibiting typical symptoms of begomoviruses was subjected to conventional PCR using universal degenerate primers, yielding an amplicon size of ~ 1.2&#xa0;kb. The sequence analysis revealed associations of tobacco curly shoot virus, ageratum enation virus, tomato leaf curl Palampur virus, mesta yellow vein mosaic virus, and tomato leaf curl Gujarat virus with the collected weed hosts. Pairwise identity and phylogenetic analyses indicated high genetic similarity (83–100%) with previously reported strains from India and neighbouring countries. The results highlight the critical role of weeds as alternate reservoirs that facilitate the diversification and spread of begomoviruses, underscoring the need for integrated management of weeds and vectors for sustaining vegetable production systems.</p>
