Functional roles of bacterial endophytes in mitigating plant diseases and enhancing crop resilience
摘要
The Green Revolution transformed Indian agriculture through the use of chemical inputs and high-yielding crop varieties, significantly enhancing productivity. However, this progress also brought challenges such as rising input costs and environmental degradation. To address these issues, research now focuses on developing sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives that safeguard the environment while ensuring food security for India’s 1.45 billion people. Among these alternatives, plant-beneficial bacterial endophytes have gained prominence for their ability to promote growth, suppress diseases, reduce chemical dependency, and enhance soil and crop health. Living symbiotically within plant tissues, these bacteria strengthen plants against biotic stresses through mechanisms such as antibiosis, production of volatile organic compounds and lipopeptides, and induction of systemic resistance (ISR). Harnessing such plant growth-promoting endophytes offers a promising long-term strategy for achieving sustainable and resilient agriculture.
